Shocking Shiitake Mushrooms

Shocking is the term applied to encouraging fruiting yields from Shiitake Mushroom Logs by immersing them in cold water. Although it is not essential is can help your logs produce more mushrooms.

Shocking Shiitake mushroom logs is best carried out within the growing season (March to November) on warm afternoons and can be done up to four times

  1. Do not move the log for up to one month before shocking.

  2.  Move the log and totally immerse it in cold water for 48 hours.

  3.  On removing the log from the water, return it to the shade and keep it moist and humid. Lightly covering it in either fleece or clear plastic will improve the humidity and levels of warmth for the log.

  4.  After shocking the log, mushrooms should be ready to pick within 14 to 28 days.

  5.  Once shocked the log will require a two month rest until it can be shocked again. This process may be repeated up to four times a year.
